Digital Safeguarding
Social Sandbox Coming soon
A safe, pretend social media app where pupils practise being online before they are on the real thing. Your class posts, replies and shares in a private feed while you guide every moment.
Coming soon to all schools: register your interest and we’ll let you know when it launches. Pilot schools can sign in above; pupils need the code card from their teacher and the PIN on the board.

Real practice, without the real risks
Children meet social media earlier than ever, often before they have the skills to handle unkind comments, strangers, scams or fake news. Social Sandbox gives them somewhere safe to try it first.
It looks and feels like a real app, but everything happens inside your class session. Pupils have random animal names, nothing leaves the sandbox, and you can pause the whole class at any moment to talk about what just happened.
It works in a web browser on laptops, Chromebooks and tablets. There is nothing to install.
- Built for Years 5 to 8, around ready-made lessons
- Teachers in full control: start, pause and end the session
- Live events such as a stranger’s friend request or a pile-on
- Safeguarding alerts passed straight to your DSL
- No pupil names, emails or passwords
How a lesson works
From code cards to class discussion
Set up your class
Sign in with a one-time code sent to your school email, add your class and print the code cards. Each pupil gets a random animal name.
Start the session
Put the join screen on the board. Pupils scan the QR code or type the PIN with the code from their card, and they are in.
Pupils take part
They post, reply, like and share alongside ready-made posts, while you send in events such as a fake news story or a request for personal details.
Stop, talk, reflect
Freeze the feed, spotlight a post on the board and ask the class a quick poll. Finish with a summary of how the session went.
What’s inside
Everything you need to run the lesson
Calm Otter
Kind Penguin
Bold Tiger
Gentle PandaFor pupils
A friendly feed to post, reply, like and share, with a privacy settings check, report and block buttons, an “Is this true?” button and a gentle “think before you post” prompt.
For teachers
See every post as it happens, send private nudges, trigger events for the whole class or chosen pupils, add notes and override scores, with a reason for every change.
On the board
Board mode shows the join screen, the class feed, a class health board, a spotlighted post, quick polls and discussion prompts, all safe to project.
Safeguarding
A word filter and AI moderation check every post. Links and contact details are blocked, worrying posts are held, and alerts can be handed to your DSL.
Lesson packs
Ready-made scenarios
Each pack comes with realistic posts written for the age group, a lesson plan and a short quiz.
Be kind online
From bystander to upstander: unkind comments, pile-ons and what to do about them.
Years 5–6
Stay private, stay safe
Personal information, prize scams and messages from people pupils don’t know.
Years 5–6
Group chats and friendships
Leaving people out, screenshots and how group chats can turn unkind.
Years 5–7
Real or fake?
Fake news, AI-made pictures and “free gems” offers that are too good to be true.
Years 5–8
Privacy and security by design
Social Sandbox was built for schools from the start, with the same care we bring to all our safeguarding work.
- No pupil names or accounts. Pupils log in with a code card and the live session PIN, and the school keeps the list of who is who.
- Encrypted for each school. Pupil codes, posts and notes are encrypted with a key that belongs to your school alone.
- No passwords for teachers. Teachers sign in with a one-time code sent to their school email.
- Sessions end cleanly. Ending a session signs every pupil out, and sessions end on their own after 2 hours.
- Engagedu staff can’t read pupil posts. Our team sees totals only.
